Novel to identify

I recently posted this to Stumpers-L and got no answer, so maybe someone
on this list can help out.
Here's what I can remember about this book: two brothers or friends in
the United States; they travel and meet a Native American and his
hospitable wife; a debilitating disease called "the frakes" (symptoms of
achy muscles, among other things); takes place in 19th century; written
in 20th century, probably by a man. I've scoured the Internet for
"frakes" but no joy, and thought John Dos Passos or William Carlos
Williams might be the author, but can't identify any of their works as
this one. This is for me, so no deadline, but it _is_ driving me batty.
Thanks for any light anyone can shed.
