After all these titles that people hated, I am a bit nervous making
suggestions. But one book that I have given many times and which seems
always to have been enjoyed is Kaye Gibbons' Charms for the Easy Life.
It's a bit old, so maybe your friends will have read it already. And Gary
Paulsen's Nightjohn is short, powerful, and very moving, although it might
not be entertaining exactly. Because it is a YA/J book, adults might not
know about it, but it is too good to miss.
Here in SC, Lee Smith is very popular. Fair and Tender Ladies is
entertainingly told if you like books told in the form of letters. And in
that same style is Follow Your Heart, a short novel in the form of letters
written by a grandmother in Italy to her estranged granddaughter in the
US. Family stuff, lovingly and bluntly told, and quite touching. Author
is Tamaro, not sure of spelling.
Good luck.
Happy holidays.

My brother's daughter [6] is receiving Louise Erdrich's GRANDMOTHER'S PIGEON [a fantasy about the passenger pigeon].
My younger brother is receiving Terry Pratchett's THE LAST CONTINENT [visit to Discworld's Australia].
My older nephew [4] is receiving Tomie de Paola's NANA UPSTAIRS AND NANA DOWNSTAIRS.
My younger nephew [2] is receiving Laura Melmed's JUMBO'S LULLABY.
One friend is receiving Charlotte P. Gilman's THE YELLOW WALLPAPER [feminist classic].
Another is receiving Laura Crum's SLICKROCK [murder while ponytreking].
A 3rd is receiving Terry Pratchett's REAPER MAN [Death becomes a farm laborer].
I try to fit the book to the person.

I am wondering what you books you are choosing to give as gifts to friends and
relatives during this holiday season.
I still need to pick out a few gift books. I don't have much of a problem
with picking out non fiction, but this year I have not read much fiction and
I like to give some people, particularly the women on my list, an enjoyable
and entertaining book of fiction.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

On to holiday books.....Lots of people on my list are receiving AUTOGRAPHED
copies of Lorna Landvik's "Patty Jane's House of Curl." Autographed, as if
it weren't wonderful enough all by itself. Of course not every library is
lucky enough to have Lorna Landvik in for an author program just a month
before Christmas.
Lorna has stand-up comedy in her past history, so you can imagine what a
great speaker she is. She was reasonably affordable and of course it
helped to be not too far from Minneapolis too.

Just a thought. Instead of giving books, one of my favorite received
gifts is The BookLovers Calendar 2000. It's a desktop calendar with
nonfiction, fiction, modern, classics, young adult, etc. That gives the
recipient lots of ideas to go on.

My nephew has read all of Harry Potter's books and so I am
getting him a couple of Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest
series. My other nephew does not read much fiction fo I am
giving him Harry Potter and "Perdito the Brave" plus the book
he asked for - the Pokeman guide. His 13 year old sister
wants the teenage chicken soup book.
My fifteen year old niece is receiving "Amazon papers"
and "Real Teens, vol. 1" while her younger sister is receiving
a book about Ricky Martin and a Hank the Cowdog book.
Both of them are relunctant readers. Their seventeen year old
brother is receiving the first Prey book by John Sandford. He
has just switched from military action to crime and likes to
read.
I am still on a hunt for a book about dragons for my 3 year
old nephew while my 2 year old niece wants books about
balls and dogs. My six year old nephew wants "Runaway
Ralph" - his parents read to him every night and just finished
"Mouse and the Motorcyle."
I will probably look through the books by regional authors to
find something for my dad - nonfiction - though I just found a
military action author that was new to me and I might look for
one of his - John J. Gobbell.
I am also looking for a nonfiction title about getting a divorce,
something with some good advise and some humor.
Hope this gives you ideas.

As far as Bridget Jones' Diary went, I thought it was hilariously funny...so
much so that after reading it by a pool in Florida, I also listened to the
Recorded Books version on tape a while later...both my husband and another
male friend also found it quite funny as did quite a few women friends. The
only downside to the book was that I realized that I was a "smug married"
living "a chaotic singleton" lifestyle (without all the wonderful partying,
sad to say). I think your sister will probably enjoy it a lot.
