So far we seem to have come up with mostly men who
write women well. Can anyone think of some women
writers who do men well? It's hard for me to judge,
not being male, but surely there must be some.

Anne Tyler is one possibility. Also, Tawni O'Dell, an author who has
been described in PW as writing well from the male perspective, has just
written her debut novel _Back Roads_. The protagonist is a 20-year-old man
from a dysfunctional family.

Judith Jance (better known as J.A. Jance) writes the J.P. Beaumont mystery
series. Very well done. She has been recognized by the Seattle Police
Department for her realistic portrayal of police life.

Carol Shields - Larry's Party is written from a man's point of view (though I've wondered if men find it credible.) And Pat Barker's trilogy that starts with Regeneration is about men.

In the book "A Virtuous Woman" by Kaye Gibbons, the author alternately
uses the woman's voice and her husband's voice. She does both of them
very well, and both are quite believable.

James Tiptree, Jr. (who was really Alice Sheldon) wrote many science fiction books and won
both the Hugo and Nebula awards. Even her agent did not know who she was. Tiptree was widely
praised for "his" great writing until Sheldon was unveiled as a woman, and then suddenly
critics began to find that Tiptree had been overrated!
