For mysteries set in ancient Rome and the Classical world / era
generally--short stories as well as novels, work in other languages
as well as in English--by far the most complete list I know of is at
"The Detective and the Toga" website at:
<A HREF="http://www.best.com/~heli/roman/romys.shtml">http://www.best.com/~heli/roman/romys.shtml</A>
He also provides hotlinks to some other sites dealing with mysteries
in medieval and other historical periods.

here is the list of mysteries set in ancient times. I thank you all for your
suggestions, and should add that my patron wasn't interested in anything
much later than the first or second century AD, so Ellis Peters and Peter
Tremayne (personal favourites of mine...) didn't get a mention.
I have included one URL, as I was given it and found it VERY helpful.
