So far, I have thought of:
TO SIR WITH LOVE by Braithwaite
UP THE DOWN STAIRCASE by Kaufman
DANGEROUS MINDS (formerly known as MY POSSE DON'T DO HOMEWORK) by Johnson,
which I have seen catalogued in fiction AND nonfiction (go figure!)
YEARS by Spencer
BLACKBOARD JUNGLE by Evan Hunter
Also, am I remembering correctly that Laura Ingalls Wilder became a teacher,
perhaps in the novel THESE HAPPY GOLDEN YEARS?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Lisa

I haven't read most of these so I can't judge whether
they are good. Some of these may have been mentioned
by others. Also, my booklists occasionally go off on
tangents, so forgive me if these are not all directly
on point.
Now, without further excuses, here's the list.

Brighten the Corner Where You Are Fred Chappell
To Serve Them All My Days RF Delderfield
Sophie's World Jostein Gaarder
Goodbye Mr Chips James Hilton
The Blackboard Jungle Evan Hunter
Up the Down Staircase Bel Kaufman

I recommend Rookery Blues by Jon Hassler and Straight
Man by Richard Russo. Both pretty funny at times.

Also, Frank McCourt's new "'Tis", though not fiction, does have quite a

Following the nonfiction thread; any of Vivian Paley's brief, moving, eye-opening books
on her kindergarten classes at the University of Chicago's Lab School. I couldn't put

In nonfiction, I would also recommend Jesse Stuart's autobiographical
story about teaching school in rural Kentucky, "The Thread that Runs So
True."
