Fellow Fiction-Lers--

I'm thinking someone in this erudite group is just the person to answer my
query. For a presentation I'm giving, I need to know the number of books
(fiction and non-) that the average American adult reads per year. I
can't find the answer anywhere! Tried almanacs, the Statistical
Abstract of the US, the ALA website, the ABA website - all to no avail.

If you can give me the statistic and its source, I would deeply appreciate
it. TIA!

includes stats about reading in general.

Quotable library facts on ALA's website <A HREF="http://www.ala.org">http://www.ala.org</A> has interesting
facts to insert in presentations. From the site, "Americans check out an
average of six books a year" and "they spend more on potato chips and
snack foods than on public libraries."

A group called the Book Industry Study Group commissions a consumer research
study on Reading and Book Purchasing on a fairly regular basis, which
includes exactly this kind of information. I believe one was done in 1998.
BISG does have a website (www.bisg.org), but I'm not sure if any stats are
available to non-members. They might be willing to supply you with one or
two facts out of the goodness of their hearts... Or perhaps some library has
a copy you can ILL or get the relevent info copied from.

I used an earlier version of the report in some research for a class in
readers advisory in library school and found it quite interesting.
