Patron is looking for a children's book (1930's/40's) about a prince
covered in gold leaf. A bird slowly takes gold from the prince to give
to those in need.

I believe this is THe Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. Probably
reprinted in the 30's if that's what your patron remembers. My
library has a picture book version. The bird peels off the gold leaf
from the prince (who is a statue) and also takes the jewels from his
eyes for the poor...

Sounds like "The Happy Prince", by Oscar Wilde. "A beautiful, golden,
jewel-studded statue and a little swallow give all they have to help the
