Dear All
can anyone tell me if the Mrs Pollifax novels have to read in order? I have
a patron who has just read the first one and LOVED it, and has found 3 more
on our shelves, but they come a fair way down the list in terms of when they
were published. She's in a hurry to read the next one but it has to come in
from another library, and in the meantime she wants to know if she'll spoil
things for herself by reading these others.
I haven't read them myself - can any Dorothy Gilman fans out there help?

I have read several of these novels and enjoyed them a lot. I have also not
read them in order and I think it is okay to do that. Only occasionally
does the author refer to something that occurred previously in another book,
but not so much that it makes you feel like there is something you have
missed. So I would say that while it would be nice to read them in order,
it isn't necessary. They are very good in any order! But now that you
mentioned it I may go back and reread them in order just for fun! Thanks!

I don't think it is necessary to read the Mrs. Pollifax books in order...I
think they are more interesting if read in order especially the first few
until you become familiar with the reoccurring characters. I would
remommend the reader listen to one of them on tape if your library has any
books on tape. Hearing Mrs. Pollifax's "voice" give you a great mental
picture of her.

I've read the Mrs. Pollifax books and would recommend reading them in order as
characters are introduced who appear in later books.

There is a change in Mrs Pollifax's marital status as the books progress.
That might constitute a "spoiler" for the patron if she skips over the
book where she meets her future husband.

Mrs. Pollifax fans may be interested to know that a new novel in the series, called Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled, will be published in February. It's about Mrs. P's efforts to find a young woman who has disappeared in Syria. Booklist will review it in January.

I do suggest reading them in order because her life style changes and
she does meet the same people in a few of them.
