I have a request from a patron for fiction that
centers around merchant vessels, like oil tankers,
merchant marine and cargo ships. The patron doesn't
want war ships and only stories set in modern
times(after 1950s). I'd really appreciate any input!.

SHIPKILLER by Justin Scott

Main character's wife is killed when their small boat is taken
out by an oil tanker. He then dedicates his life to destroying

Towing Jehova by James Morrow concerns an "Exxon Valdez"esque
captain called back into duty in order to tow the body of God,
who has died and fallen from the sky into the ocean, to the Arctic...

It definitely involves a ship, and is very funny and more than
a bit sacriligeous -- might fit the "ship" bill, but I'd be careful
about making sure your patron is open to the allegorical nature of the
story...

Has anyone suggested Voyage of the Narwhal by Andrea Barrett yet? What a
great "ship" book--perhaps not exactly merchant, but more explorative. A
GREAT read. I would also recommend Barrett for the literary fiction list.
Especially her short story collection Ship Fever. Patty

Try Rising Wind by Dick Couch. It's a techno-thriller where terrorosts take over a tanker. It was very good.
