I am currently working on a PhD on Chicago literature in the first
half of the 20th century. I am planning to write a chapter on the
Jewish Ghetto. Could you suggest any novels of the period that deal
with it ?

One that comes immediately to mind was the underrated "Dream Seekers" by
Grace Marks (wife of Norman Marks) which was published in 1992. Fits your
criteria very well, and was a good book, also.
