He believes they are British Navy stories, set during the Napoleonic Wars.

He also thinks that this is a new series.

The 20 volumes of Patrick O'Brien's Aubrey-Maturin saga--probably the best writer of historical novels set in that period since Georgette Heyer and Kate Ross died, IMHO.

There are several series of Napoleonic-era sailing stories. The current
best known is probably Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series that begins
with "Master and Commander," but there are lots of other choices.

You can find an annotated reading list I did of late 18th and early 19th

Could this be the Stephan Maturin series by Patrick O'Brien:
The Wine Dark Sea
The Commodore, etc.?
I also highly recommend the Richard Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell. These
are very similar, but set on land during the same time period, the
Napoleonic Wars.

There is a series of sea stories by Dewey Lambdin. The main character is
Alan Lewrie, originally shanghaied onto a ship due to some shifty
manipulation by (I think) his uncle.
The ones I know of are, in order of appearance: The King's Coat, The French
Admiral, The King's Commission, The King's Privateer, the Gun Ketch, H.M.S.
Cockeral, The King's Commander, Jester's Fortune(this pub. 1999)
I fgure someone else will list Patrick O'Brien...

I'll suggest a series that is a bit more of a stretch. David Weber's
sci-fi series featuring Honor Harrington is frequently compared to the
Hornblower series. Many reviewers call it "Hornblower in space."

The main character is female and in fact this series fits another thread
that was running on the list. David Weber has written a great female
character.

Sounds like it could be Dewey Lambdin's series, which book jacket quotes compare to Forester, though the time frame is Revolutionary War period and after.
