The book you are thinking of is Childhood's End by Clarke.

Did Arthur C. Clarke write a book called "Rama" or "Return to Rama" with
an alien contact to earth via a satellite or asteroid? (or something?)
The reason I mention it is that when I read it, I was intrigued by the
aliens' appearance (or lack of) until the end half of the book. They
were discribed as the "classic" description of the devil (hence the
religious connection).
Anyway, that might be way off. Hope you find the *real answer*! BYE!
