I checked "The Top 10 of Everything 1997" by Russell Ash. There was a list
of the top 10 best-selling books of all time. "Valley of the Dolls" by
Jacqueline Susann was #9 on the list, with at least 28,712,000 copies sold,
and the first novel, which would make it the best-selling novel of all time.
In case you are wondering, the Bible is #1, Quotations from Chairman Mao #2
(all Chinese had to own copy, which helped to inflate the sales), American
Spelling Book by Noah Webster #3, Guinness Book of Records #4, McGuffey
Readers #5, A Message to Garcia by Elbert Hubbard #6, Dr. Spock's Baby &
Child Care #7, the World Almanac #8. The closest rival to "Valley" was
"Gone with the Wind."

I'm sure other sources might give other statistics, but this is what I
found. Hope it helps.

The Guinness Book of World Records 2000 lists the top 3 best selling
novels, each reaching sales of over 30 million copies (but it does not
specify which is 1st, 2nd & 3rd).

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Valley of the Dolls by Jacqueline Susann
