Also, Truly Grim Tales is a YA collection of altered fairy tales. In that
version of Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack is a pygmy and the giants are
regular humans who need a particular mineral in the bones of pygmies for
their survival. Again, it sounds silly but it is very effective and
eerie. The author is Galloway.

Robert Coover wrote Pinocchio in Venice, a (definitely) adult version of the Collodi
story. There is a long list of re-written fairy tales like Briar Rose (a personal favorite)
by Jane Yolen at http://www.webrary.org/rs/FLbklist12.html#FTales One novel that
isn't on that list that I love is Jack of Kinrowan by Charles DeLint, a retelling of some of
the Faerie myths and featuring Jack the Giant-Killer as a young Canadian woman in
Toronto.
Also, John Barth wrote Chimera, which is three stories of mythical characters like
Perseus and Bellerophon, but I think this is veering from what your patron really wants?

Roberta

Hello all! I would greatly appreciate any help you could offer with the
following question. Are there any fiction books that update children's
stories for adult readers? A patron just finished Wicked by Gregory
Maguire
(an update of The Wizard of Oz) and is looking for more of the same. I
know
Maguire also wrote a book that is based on the Cinderella story. Can
anybody
think of any others? Thanks in advance for your help.

Rose daughter . 1999. (Beauty & the Beast, 2nd time she's done this story)
Spindle's end . 2000.
Beauty a retelling of the story of Beauty & the beast . 1993
A knot in the grain and other stories . 1997. (Short stories)
Deerskin . 1994. (one of the most difficult ones to read, lots of emotional
issues here. the protagonist is from the princess who changes into a
hind)
The outlaws of Sherwood . 1988. (Robin Hood)
Imaginary lands . 1985
The door in the hedge . 1987-8.
Rowan . 1992
Black Beauty, 1987.
Tales from The jungle book . 1985.
Robin has more than just these, but the other ones are her own fantasy/SF
novels, not retellings of children's stories.
