Subject: novels inspired by other novels
I'm compiling a list of novels inspired by other novels. The recent
sequels to GONE WITH THE WIND and various Jane Austen novels would
count, of course, but there are also things like Gregory Maguire's
WICKED, the life story of the Wicked Witch from THE WIZARD OF OZ; or
Michael Bishop's BRITTLE INNINGS, which has among its many inspirations
Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN.
I'll be happy to gather suggestions into a list if anyone's interested.
Many thanks.

REC'D: 10/26/99, 10:26 AM
"My Dear Watson" by Angus Maclaren
"The Moor" and "The Monstorous Regiment of Women" by Laurie R. King
"Seance for a Vampire" by Fred Saberhagen
"The Angel of the Opera" by Sam Siciliano
"Sherlock Holmes and the Red Demon" by Larry Millett
There are many, many others I've just named a few that came to mind
quickly. A litle stretch but what about J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and
the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy which are retellings of the "Beowulf"
legend? This leads me to "Grendel" by John C. Gardner and somehow that
brings to mind "The Mists of Avalon" by Marion Zimmer Bradley, the
retelling of the Arthur legend from a female point of view. Bradley also
wrote "The Firebrand" which retells the story of Troy with Cassandra and
the main character. One more and I'll stop (or I'll be at this all day):
"H.: the story of Heathcliff's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights" by Lin
Haire-Sargent. Enjoy!
Please post your completed list to Fiction_L.
