I have a bizarre one for you. One of the librarians here in the Texas Panhandle
has a patron inquiring about a book she read years ago, involving a child who
was put in a frying pan. That is all the patron can remember. I figure if
anyone can figure this one out, it would be a Fiction-L'er! Thanks!

I used to own this book. Title may have Silent in it. The girl's name was
Laura, and her story is narrated by her psychologist, a man, who is
trying to find out why she won't talk. At the end she is 16 and normal.
The book was a mass market paperback and published in the late 1970's or
very early 1980's.

This could well be No Language But a Cry by Bert Kruger Smith (c1964). It's
non-fiction, but set up as a detective story regarding a child who won't
speak and the psychiatrist who is trying to find out what has happened to
her.

I finally heard back from the fellow librarian who wanted to inquired about
the child in the frying pan book. It was indeed No Language but a Cry.
