I have a patron whose 41 year old daughter wonders if someone remembers the
title of this book from her childhood (not sure if it's a picture book or
not). The lines she remembers are an owl crying 'too-whit, too-whoo,
too-whit, too-whoo; will someone tell me what to do?'
There is a Shel Silverstein poem, "Enter This Deserted House" which
contains a too-whit etc., but that's of course too recent. Thanks.

The closest line we've found to your patron's request comes from a poem by Lydia Maria Child - Who Stole the Bird's Nest? It appears in Volume 10 of "The Junior Classics," with copyrights beginning in 1938 and reprints into the late 1950s. It would likely appear in many anthologies, I'm sure. It begins:

To-whit! to-whit! to-whee!
Who will listen to me?
Who stole four eggs I laid,
And the nice nest I made?
