A patron is looking for a fairly recent novel set prior to and during World War II. She described it as a coming of age novel. A young Chinese boy becomes sick and is sent to Japan to recuperate. Leprosy also figures in the story.

This sounds like The Samurai's Garden by Tsukiyama--a lovely story.
