I have a patron who is looking for an author who is described on the jackets
of her books as "the next Miss Read". The patron thinks this author has
written 3 books. Like Miss Read, they take place in an English village, but
they aren't as light as Miss Read--characters are having affairs, etc. I
know this isn't much to go on, but that's all she has. We have tried
Novelist, What Do I Read Next. We have also ruled out M.C. Beaton, Barbara
Pym and Jan Karon.

I believe I have seen Ann Purser (Pastures New and New Every Morning)
promoted as "the next Miss Read."

Sounds like it could be Rebecca Shaw. She has two titles described on the jacket as a "drama of village life", though our copies don't mention Miss Read specifically. They are THE NEW RECTOR and TALK OF THE VILLAGE.

Are the books supposed to be part of a series? If not, you might look at
Joanna Trollope. Some of them are more urban settings, but The Rector's
Wife at least might fit the bill.
