Greetings,
I have a patron searching for a book he read in the 50's. It is set in an
army engineer company in Europe during WWII. The tone is similar to MASH,
including a cross dressing supply sargeant. The words "company" or
"platoon" may be in the title. The patron does not think it is "Catch 22"
or "The Girl He Left Behind or All Quiet in the Third Platoon" by Marion
Hargrove.

His most vivid recollection of the book is a scene in a foxhole where one
soldier observes that there are no atheists in foxholes. Another soldier
responds that atheists are better off in foxholes because if you believe
Someone is looking out for you some Nazi bastard will get you.
