REC'D: 10/30/99, 12:25 PM
We planned it for an afternoon when school was out,
and advertised it as a book discussion for all ages.
Then for two weeks ahead of time, we had a jar filled
with jellybeans (3095) for patrons to guess the
quantity, and win a copy of the book. We gave 2
prizes, one for 8-18, one for 19 and above. We had a
Harry Potter crossword puzzle, wordsearch, and a book
display of fantasy books for the week before the
program.
The discussion was fabulous. And the discussion
guides on Scholastic's web page were very helpful. We
had 7 adults and 18 kids between the ages of 6 and 12.
The kids really knew the book, and most of them did
better than some of the adults in my book discussions.
And, one boy had difficulty reading, and read it in
four hours, and one girl said she was a slow reader
and read it in a week. I had more boys than girls,
and most of the boys had actually read all three
books.
This was a terrific book for a book discussion,
particularly one that would attract boys.
