Fiction_L'rs who were fortunate enough to attend this mystery conference in Milwaukee over the weekend already know this, and those of you who didn't have a chance to be there have our sympathy.
Much of the credit for this absolutely must go to Gary Warren Niebuhr and the others he assembled to organize the Conference. Like most of us, I've been to my fair share of professional conferences, but this one was head and shoulders above any I've attended in terms of organization. In a short speech at close of the Conference, Gary modestly ascribed the success to being a librarian (also mentioning that he was anal and German) but as a fellow librarian I was proud to think that the organizational skills we bring to what we do every day could shine in a non-library realm. So, in closing, may I say that (one) if you ever need to organize a conference, try to draft Gary, and (two) if you're anywhere near Denver next fall, don't miss your chance to attend Bouchercon 31. Gary won't be running it, but maybe the people who do will feel the need to reach just a little farther to meet the expectations of anyone who attended this year.

Oh, absolutely, I'm talking about the conference with anyone who will stay still long
enough to hear about it. Including you all.
I can't emphasize how valuable this particular conference was to me as a librarian, and
urge everyone to lobby their administrators to send them next year. I am not a
devoted mystery reader, and the opportunity to hear dozens (!) of writers talk about
their books was like taking an entire course in mystery fiction.

Hear, Hear!
1. Each presentation was a panel discussion, allowing you to hear from four or five
writers on a particular subject: serial killers, animals in mysteries, plot versus
character, or my personal favorite, Smartass Protagonists and Why We Love Them.
Dennis Lehane rocks!
2. The so-called goodie bag was a piece of *luggage* full of books and other treats.
3. The pocket guide to the conference included every piece of info you needed in a
four inch square booklet.
4. Every event was in a single hotel or across the street.
5. The weather was beautiful. I don't know how Gary arranged this.
6. The panelist's names were spelled correctly on the place cards, the mikes worked,
the rooms weren't too cold, and the food was great.
The bar has definitely been raised!

Opinions my own.

Glad to hear Bouchercon was a hit--hope to go someday. Magna Cum Murder
is coming up at Ball State in Muncie, IN and is organized along the same
lines, but on a smaller scale(Oct. 29-31st)--the featured guest will
be Anne Perry. Also Haprer College is sponsoring a more regional mystery
get together called LOVE IS MURDER the first weekend in Feb. at the
Schaumburg Radisson--this I attended last year and enjoyed the smaller
size(about 130-150) and local authors and also a chance to meet with other
area librarians. Hope you have been bitten by the mystery bug.
