Youth Services Easy Fiction

The Easy Fiction collection was initiated to bridge the gap between easy readers and juvenile fiction. These books all have chapters and are about 40-80 pages in length. Easy Fiction is generally shorter than the titles chosen for Fiction. The subject matter appeals to children in grades 2 and 3, although readers in grades 1 and 4 may also find them appropriate. Chapters are usually episodic, and do not require a long attention span, but the child experiences a feeling of accomplishment when reading his first "chapter book."

Influencing Factors

Series which have characters with whom children in these grades can identify, such as the second graders in the "Kids of the Polk Street School" series, are popular. Books about children whose parents were born in another country, as well as sports stories and mysteries on an easy level, are favorites of the users.

Selection Plan

Titles in the easy fiction section are selected from the standard selection journals for children's literature. Because the books in this section are geared mainly towards children in only two grades, there are not as many of them as there are in some other fiction sections. Recently, several publishers have begun to publish series specifically aimed toward this audience. Random House is the leader at this time with its high quality "Stepping Stone" series. Durability is a consideration, and library bindings are preferred.

Retention & Weeding

In the past, this section has not been fresh, new, bright or colorful due to the dearth of suitable materials. Many of the books are old and out-dated, but were kept because there was nothing to fill the gap. Now that new and more appealing books on this level are being published, this section will be weeded extensively to make way for new editions.

Development Plan

This collection should be maintained at the current level to meet patron interest and demand.
